On 3rd
Sept 2016, I had visited to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) with my
friends. Before I visit, I did some research to find out the background and
history of National Gallery of Victoria. I found that it is Australia’s oldest
and pre-eminent public art museum, hosting blockbuster exhibitions and one of
the world’s finest art collections, founded in 1861. The collection of NGV
encompasses treasures from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and the pre-Columbian
period, in addition to an Oceanic gallery dedicated to the indigenous cultures
of the Pacific area. It also includes nearly 16,000 international prints and
drawings, a distinguished array of European and Asian decorative arts, and a
gallery space dedicated to 4000 works representing the art of Asia. There are
also outstanding collection of European and British paintings dating from 1200
to today, fashion and textiles exhibits, photography, furniture and sculpture.
Before we walked into the
gallery, we were requested to put our bag in the locker as it is not allowed to
bring our bag in. After that, we took the escalator to the second floor of the
building. The gallery contains 3 to 4 different parts, with numbering labelled
in front of the entrances of each part. There are some sculptures in front of
each of the entrances. I founded that they are cute and simple, and I started
to take my camera out to capture picture of some of them.
Then, we walked into the first
part of the gallery. It was look like what I imagined before. A large space,
with a lot of picture hanging on the wall, and some artwork placed in the
middle of the space. It was very quiet, and people are observing around, some
even holding a pen and notes book, trying to do some notes on what they seen.
At the beginning, I had a lot of
patience and look at the picture one by one, trying to understand the meaning
of the picture by reading the description wrote beside it.
After doing the same
for 10 minutes, I started to lose my patience because I couldn’t understand
most of the meaning of the picture. Therefore, I continue the visit by just
looking into the picture without reading its description, and only read for
those pictures which attracted me a lot.
After went through all the
parts of the gallery, we made a conclusion that art is abstract. Every people
have different opinion towards art, and different definition/ concept with what
“beautiful” is. Some of the picture looks like what we usually draw when we was
studying in the pre-school. Sometimes, we might get a bad grade on what we had
draw, but the drawing displayed here was appreciated by the visitors. In the
confrontation of our daily life, we need not absorb, react or feel bad to the
critism from others when we know that we are doing good. What we need to do is
do our own best, be confident to ourself, and appreciate yourself.
